Calvert County, Md., Garners National Ranking Among Wealthiest Counties

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- August 30, 2006 - Calvert County, Md., may be the State’s smallest county in land area, but it has attained one of the nation’s most coveted distinctions among counties. According to U.S. Census data released yesterday, Calvert County is ranked as the third wealthiest county in the nation with a median household income of $84,388. The information, provided in the bureau's annual American Community Survey, states that Calvert County is third behind Hunterdon County, N.J., with $93,342, and Douglas County, Colo., with $87,670, among American counties with populations of more than 65,000 but less than 250,000.

The American Community Survey is the nation's largest household survey with a sample size of three million people and is designed to help communities track how they are changing. Data is collected every year for the survey from every county in the United States.

Linda Vassallo, director of Economic Development points to a number of factors to explain the County’s rise to the top of the list. “For the past several years, we have worked diligently to improve commercial growth and expansion opportunities for our business owners, ensure that jobs and corporate tax revenues increase and market the beauty and diverse tourism activities of Calvert County,” she said. “Of course, we also benefit from our close proximity to Washington, D.C., and the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, a concentration of talented and well-educated workers and the location of major employers within the County and the greater Washington region.”
