Calling All World War II Veterans
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- July 11, 2006 - A sailor with binoculars will soon be standing “on watch” at the water’s edge overlooking Back Creek in Solomons. Surrounded by the Veteran’s Plaza, an area made up of bricks engraved with the names of World War II veterans, the statue will stand as a constant reminder of those who trained at the Amphibious Base on the Dowell Peninsula during World War II.
A special groundbreaking ceremony for this statue and park will be held on Friday, August 4, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. as part of the kick-off for the annual Cradle of Invasion event at the Calvert Marine Museum. The public is invited to this special event.
Funds are currently being raised to complete the memorial through the sale of engraved bricks bearing the name, rank, branch of service and years of service of a World War II veteran. Veterans need not have trained at the base, but simply to have been on active military duty during World War II. The cost is $100 per brick. Each brick comes with a certificate printed with the text that goes on the brick.
Detailed information on this project can be found at the Calvert Marine Museum Web site on the Cradle of Invasion: http://www.cradleofinvasion.org. Printable brick application forms and instructions for ordering a brick are also available at this site.
