CalvART Gallery to Celebrate First Anniversary

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- June 12, 2006 - June 17, 2006 may be an ordinary day for most people but for the 24 artists at CalvART Gallery, it will mark an historical event. On that day, CalvART Gallery artists will celebrate a successful first year of promoting artistic expression in Calvert County. It hasn’t been easy opening the cooperatively run art gallery, but both the Arts Council of Calvert County (ACCC) and CalvART Gallery members have found it rewarding.

The gallery celebrates its first anniversary during the entire month of June. The artists of CalvART Gallery will mark the success of the gallery’s first full year promoting artistic expression in Calvert County with a one-year Anniversary Gala on Saturday, June 17, to which the public is invited – to help blow out the birthday candles! New work will be on display and artisans will be on hand to perform demonstrations and answer questions.

The cooperative gallery provides permanent exhibit space for artists from St. Mary’s, Charles and Calvert counties to display and sell their work. Because of its cooperative status, each artist is responsible for serving on gallery committees, attending monthly meetings, and supporting gallery events. Additionally, artists must be present at the gallery at least one business day a month. These activities help to establish a stronger bond between artist, gallery and the community.

The artists have a variety of backgrounds and many collective years of experience. This becomes readily apparent in the diverse type of art available. Painting, sculpture, pottery, prints, photography and jewelry are on display and available for purchase. Members routinely bring in new work to showcase, and commissioned art is also available.
