Board of County Commissioners, Calvert County, Maryland Response to the FPL Group/Constellation Energy Merger

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- December 21, 2005 - FPL Group, Inc. (NYSE: FPL) and Constellation Energy (NYSE: CEG) yesterday announced that they have signed a definitive agreement to create the nation's largest competitive energy supplier and its second-largest electric utility portfolio.

On behalf of the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners, president David Hale said, “Constellation's presence in the County has been very positive and the merger, which will create the nation's largest competitive energy supplier and its second-largest electric utility, is likely to bring additional investment and jobs for our citizens. These are two of the strongest, fastest-growing and most successful energy companies in America.”

“Constellation Energy is the County’s single largest commercial taxpayer, at $15.3M in FY 2005, and employs nearly 1,000 employees. Their financial impact in this community allows our citizens to enjoy one of the lowest property tax rates in the State of Maryland,” said Hale. "We are confident that our outstanding relationship with the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant staff and company representatives will continue during the merger process and we look forward to an expanded presence.”

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant currently houses two nuclear reactors that came online in 1975 and 1977. The facility, originally designed to house a total of four reactors, is the only nuclear facility in the State of Maryland and was the first commercial nuclear plant in the United States to receive re-licensing in 2000. Calvert Cliffs currently generates 1,700 megawatts of electricity each day – enough to power one-third of Maryland’s homes and businesses.
