"Re-Renovated" Information Center Reopens in Solomons
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- November 4, 2005 - In spring of 2004, the Calvert County Information Center in Solomons was renovated and updated to better accommodate visitors in the southern end of Calvert County. Then, in September, 2004, a wicked and fast-moving waterspout ventured across the Patuxent River from St. Mary’s County on a stormy afternoon and nearly demolished the small building tucked next to the Thomas Johnson Bridge on the southbound side of Solomons Island Road.
At last, repairs on the structure have been completed and the staff, along with their collection of brochures, maps, pamphlets and wealth of knowledge for the traveling public, has once again settled into their familiar building. While repairs were underway, the Center was temporarily housed across the street at the Calvert Marine Museum, but Information Center associate, Julia Cameron, is happy to be back in place. “This is our home and it’s good to settle back in,” she said. “Plus, this building is more visible and convenient to the public since people can easily access it as they come off the bridge or go north or south on Rt. 4.”
On a recent Thursday afternoon, Cameron pointed out the variety of people she sees on a typical day. “We’ve had more than 30 people come through today looking for information, directions or help,” she said. “It’s really amazing where they come from, too – Annapolis, Northern Virginia, Baltimore – even France, Australia and Germany.”
On November 1, the Solomons Information Center began their winter hours of operation, open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm. They will be closed December 24 and 25 for Christmas and December 31 and January 1 for New Year’s.
