Fun For All at the Calvert County Watermen's Festival
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- September 14, 2004 -- The Calvert County, Maryland Department of Economic Development invites residents to enjoy an afternoon of fun at the third annual Calvert County Watermen’s Festival on Sunday, September 26, 2004, noon until 4:00 p.m. at the Watermen’s Wharf on Solomons Island.
There will be activities for children, an anchor toss contest, crab soup cook-off and an exciting boat-docking contest among some of the Chesapeake Bay’s most highly skilled work boat and charter boat captains. Festival organizer, Steve Zimmerman, is expecting 12-15 boats to compete for cash prizes and bragging rights. “The Watermen’s Festival gives us the opportunity to showcase the traditions of Calvert County’s watermen and celebrate the bounty of the Chesapeake Bay,” said Zimmerman.
In addition, Deana Dove will be performing live and there will be food, beer and merchandise for sale. Admission to the Festival is free.
The event is sponsored by the Calvert County Watermen’s Association, which was established in 1975. The goal of this non-profit organization is to improve water quality to ensure future harvest of seafood and to raise public awareness about the beauty and heritage of Calvert County’s waterways.
