Barrett & Associates, Inc. Relocates Under Free Land Program

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- August 19, 2003 -- The Calvert County Economic Development Authority (EDA) announced today that R.A. Barrett & Associates, a Calvert-based company, will relocate their Southern Maryland operations to the Calvert County Industrial Park as the third recipient of the County’s Free Land Program. The company was previously located in Dunkirk, Md.

Barrett & Associates is an engineering, land planning and surveying corporation serving Southern Maryland. The company’s management team has over 70 years of combined experience managing commercial and residential projects. The company employs registered professional engineering and professional land surveyors in addition to a technical support team of associate engineers, engineer technicians, CAD operators, draftspersons, survey technicians and field survey crews. Barrett & Associates currently employs 21 individuals; employment is anticipated to increase.

As part of their contract with the EDA, Barrett & Associates was required to construct a minimum of 8,000 sq/ft by August 1, 2003; the company constructed 12,000 square feet. The property is currently valued at $55,000 per acre or approximately $135,850.

"I am pleased with Calvert County's support. They were very willing to work with my construction schedule and I am confident that the move will allow us to expand our client base in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties," said Randy Barrett, president. "This central location also helps us find talented employees in the entire Southern Maryland region. This move allowed us to expand our operations and take advantage of some tremendous Enterprise Zone advantages in the Park."

"We look forward to having them in the Industrial Park," said Terri Wolfley, Chair, EDA. "They are another terrific example of how a small business grows to be a very successful business in Calvert County."

The Free Land Program is no longer available in Calvert County. To have qualified for the Free Land Incentive Program, companies demonstrated that they fell within the County’s target market industries, met the predetermined set of criteria and matched one of the Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) identified as a target market industry by Calvert County. Businesses were also required to:

  • Begin construction of a new facility within two years;
  • Hire the agreed upon number of employees;
  • Maintain employment and ownership for 10 years; and
  • Provide an initial investment of $.5M in Calvert County.

The Calvert County Industrial Park consists of 226 acres divided into 42 lots. The park is the largest full-scale industrial park in the County and is designated as a Maryland Enterprise Zone. The Calvert County Industrial Park is the only Enterprise Zone in Southern Maryland. The average lot size is 2.5 acres. The Park is located five miles west of Prince Frederick and 32 miles from the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. The EDA is responsible for promoting quality economic development Countywide and is the sole owner and manager of the Calvert County Industrial Park.
