Calvert County's 2002 "Maryland's Most Beautiful People" Representative Announced

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- October 08, 2002 -- The Calvert County Department of Economic Development is pleased to announce that the Friends of Calvert Cliffs State Park have been selected as Calvert County's 2002 Representative for the 16th annual "Maryland's Most Beautiful People" Volunteer Award. The Friends, along with all of this year's nominees, were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners during their October 1st meeting.

The Friends of Calvert Cliffs State Park is a group of volunteers who continuously work hard to help maintain a beautiful and enjoyable park for County and State residents. They have hosted several workdays to mulch the playground, complete equipment repairs and clean the fire pits at Bay Breeze Youth Group Camping Area. As a result of their efforts, new signs were purchased for the Orange Trail "Eagle Walk." They also moved 10 tons of gravel to the Orange Trail! The Friends have co-hosted the Prehistoric Egg Hunt in April, the Girl Scout Summer Day Camp in June, and assisted with a new pavilion built by a local Eagle Scout in the youth group camping area. This dedicated group helps maintain and keep the beautiful State Park known as Calvert Cliffs open.

"A total of seventeen people and/or organizations were nominated this year in Calvert County," stated Herman Schieke, Tourism Specialist with the Calvert County Department of Economic Development. "The Friends of Calvert Cliffs State Park were chosen by a panel of judges consisting of representatives from the local media along with last year's recipient of the award. The judging process was overseen by members of Calvert County's Tourism Advisory Committee. We congratulate The Friends of Calvert Cliffs State Park and thank the following 2002 nominees for their dedication to the County," Mr. Schieke added.
