Calvert County Farmers Market Association Seeking Growers for 2000 Season

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- June 1, 2000 -- The Department of Economic Development (DED) announced today the results of their recent commuter survey. The survey was distributed to each household in Calvert County and made available on their web site. A total of 468 surveys were returned.

The DED asked nine specific questions about commuting patterns, telecommuting, work location, recruitment, and skill sets. Based on the survey results, Calvert’s commuting labor force consists of 32.1 percent high-tech, 33.8 percent services, 4.3 percent construction, 4.1 percent retail, 2.6 percent manufacturing, .6 percent hospitality, and 22.2 percent other. Over 30 percent of the respondents indicated that they would be willing to help the DED recruit their organization to the County, 65.8 percent indicated that they would be interested in using the Calvert Telecommuting Center, and 90.4 percent indicated that they would prefer to work in the County.

Approximately 60 percent of Calvert’s workforce commutes to jobs out of the County daily. By conducting this survey, the Department of Economic Development hopes to gain information that will assist in understanding where our labor force is employed outside of the County. Results of the survey are available to the public by clicking here or by calling 410.535.4583 or 301.855.1880 to receive a copy by mail, e-mail cced@co.cal.md.us.

While these survey results do not reflect the entire civilian labor force of 37,887 (March 2000), it does provide a good sampling of the commuting labor force. More detailed information about the civilian labor force is available in the annual "State of the Economy" prepared by the Calvert County Economic Development Commission.
