Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program (MIPS) to County Businesses

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- February 17, 1998 -- The Calvert County Department of Economic Development announced today that the Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program (MIPS) is currently seeking applications for Maryland companies who may qualify for matching funds. MIPS provides these funds for industry-university technology-based research partnerships at the University of Maryland System's 13 Institutions.

MIPS is designed specifically to stimulate technical innovation and enterprise in Maryland and promotes the development of new and improved products, services or processes that will help businesses compete in their markets, leading to economic benefit to the state.

This is an opportunity for southern Maryland companies to gain leverage for their R & D dollars, university expertise, and the use of specialized facilities at any of the University of Maryland's Institutions. MIPS matching grants are awarded on a competitive basis for projects based on proposals submitted jointly by Maryland companies and researchers from the University of Maryland System of institutions. The maximum MIPS grant for any single project is $70,000 per year for large and small companies and $50,000 for start-up firms.

The program originally started in July 1987. As of June 1997, 20 rounds of awards were completed, providing $925,000 in MIPS funding. Total MIPS awards from inception include 495 projects with 228 companies, 186 faculty and 10 participating University of Maryland Institutions, totaling over $21 million in MIPS funding.
