Calvert County Agriculture Commission Receives State Grant

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- September 17, 1997 -- The Calvert County Department of Economic Development announced today that the Calvert County Agriculture Commission received a grant in the amount of $7,425.00 from the Office of J. Joseph Curren, Jr. Attorney General, State of Maryland. The grant will be used to promote Agriculture in Calvert County and encourage a better understanding of the farming community among County residents. Funding for the grant is part of a settlement from a class action suit filed against American Cyanamid by all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Proceeds from the grant will be used to conduct a Farm Tour in Calvert County during the summer of 1998. The Agriculture Commission hopes to introduce newcomers to Calvert to a segment of the traditional farming community they might not otherwise have the opportunity to interact with.

"The tours will be a concerted effort to break down the barriers between our traditional farmers and the newcomers who might not understand the farming community or the farming process," said Jim Shepherd, Calvert County Department of Economic Development who assists the Agriculture Commission. "The farm tour encourages neighbors to visit County farms and communicate and share knowledge with the farming community."

We hope that the farm tour will provide the mechanism that establishes strong linkages in the community, introduces the County's agricultural program and provides a vehicle to promote current agriculture efforts in Calvert," said Betty Knapp, Chair, Calvert County Agriculture Commission. Other benefits of the tour could include: decrease in tensions, more allies for farming issues, new ideas and solutions to farming problems, and new members for traditional farming groups.
