Manufacturing & Equipment Tax Repealed In Calvert County, Maryland
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md., -- December 17, 1996 -- The Board of County Commissioners today voted to exempt machinery and equipment used in manufacturing from the County's personal property tax. The exemption applies to manufacturing companies, which in Calvert County, are mostly located in the Calvert County Industrial Park.
The action is based on concerns expressed by the business community and recommendations from the Wadley-Donovan Group, Morristown, NJ. Wadley-Donovan performed an economic assessment of the County last summer. They recommended that the County "eliminate the manufacturing and equipment tax to improve its ability to attract development." According to Wadley-Donovan, "this is crucial if the County is to retain its existing manufacturing operations and attract any new manufacturers."
"No other Maryland County in the metropolitan Washington area imposes this type of tax," said Jeff Stone, Director, Economic Development. "The Board of County Commissioners made a tremendous commitment to the business community today. The machinery and equipment tax was a significant disincentive for Calvert's businesses and other businesses who may consider Calvert County as a location."
Other Maryland Counties that currently impose this tax include Allegany, Dorchester, Garrett, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worchester.
The Calvert County Industrial Park is a designated State Enterprise Zone which provides attractive operating incentives. For more information please contact the Calvert County Department of Economic Development, 410-535-4583 or 301-855-1880, e-mail cced@co.cal.md.us.
