    February 26, 2018, 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM @ SMECO Auditorium

Are you completely new to farming, thinking about getting your hands in the soil, or wondering what kind of animals to raise? The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission is hosting a free evening workshop for those who are interested in becoming a farmer and setting up a new farming enterprise in Southern Maryland. This workshop is designed to give participants an inventory of the tools and must-have resources to begin their farming journey from the ground up, knowing what you can do, how to get started, and who to ask for help. Hear from beginning farmers who have recently started their farm operations and get to know your agricultural agencies one on one. Representatives and literature from various agricultural support and funding agencies will be available at the workshop. Confirmed representatives include University of Maryland Extension and Soil Conservation District, more to follow.

  2. WHEELS UP-A MATURING FARMING BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT PROGRAM

February 27, 2018, All Day @ University of Maryland Extension - Baltimore City Office

Have you been farming for more than 3 Years? Are you ready to move from your start-up “Survive” business model to a better “Thriving Business” model? Do you have an established farming operation but need to improve your management and profitability in a specific management area? A new training program, “Wheels Up”, offered in partnership between the University of Maryland Extension and Future Harvest-CASA, may be the business up-grade training you need to help your business “take off.” The "Wheels Up" program is for farmers with 3 or more years of business experience. As their businesses have grown and matured, critical issues have surfaced that were never anticipated in the original start-up plans. They now know what their businesses strengths and weaknesses are, but not how to correct or improve their situation. Very often the timing of these growth decisions comes simultaneously with increasing demands of family, community, and/or off-farm employment.
